The Violin Maker

Marco Cargnelutti Liutaio - Violin Maker carving a violin scroll

Born in 1983 in a small town of the eastern italian Alps, I began my journey into violin making at the age of 25, after visiting a luthier’s workshop in my area. During the school years in Cremona I met a lot of people who share my passion for violin making, and I realized that it is exactly what I wanted to do for the rest of my life!

I graduated from the Stradivari School of Violin Making in 2012, knowing only the basis of this art, and so I started looking for someone who resembled my idea of violin making, to learn from him or her, and to begin making instruments that actually represented what I had in mind. I had many interesting discussions with Masters Bellini, Scolari, Salvadori, Sora, and I learned a lot from them.

Parallel to this is my research on acoustics, which is based on many articles and papers that anyone can find on the web. My main references in this field are Carleen Hutchins, Nigel Harris, Edward Campbell, Martin Schleske, Erik Jansson and Joseph Curtin.

In 2015 I opened my workshop in my hometown, and in 2019 I moved to Udine, where I live and work. Being in constant touch with the musicians is crucial for me, and their feedback is fundamental for constantly grow as a violin maker. I took part in various exhibitions, especially in Cremona and Tokyo.

In may 2024 I took part in the II G.B. Guadagnini Violin Making Competition, and I was awarded with the 1st and 3rd prize for two violins.

The instruments I make are based mainly on Stradivari and Guarneri del gesù models, constantly looking for the best sound for the player. All my violins, violas and cellos are varnished new, with amber varnish, which gives excellent refraction while being tough and flexible. This is very important for the sound!
